Friday Fireside Feedback #8

Information for VSDCA Umpires - Round 6

1. Two day cricket – Rule 16 rules!

2. Paraphrasing GoT – Rain is Coming! In fact it may already be here – Rule 16 rules!

3. Congratulations Justin Toohey

4. From last week – what happened next?

Umpires coach Brian Benny Goodman is worried about the weather. It’s not that he’s frightened of the rain, but he does want umpires to be confident in dealing with interrupted conditions in this weekend’s matches.

1. It’s two day cricket again for most of us – white clothing and red balls…it’s all covered in Rule 16, pp 36-42 of the VSDCA Handbook.

  • Hours of play are 12.30 pm to 5.35 pm

  • Tea interval is at 3.00 pm, for 25 minutes

  • Compulsory closure of the first batting team on completion of 80 overs, and play then ends for the day

  • Should the batting team be dismissed after completion of the 75th over, or within 15 minutes of scheduled stumps, there shall be no further play except where the second batting team elects to commence its innings

As a corollary of the previous condition, no declarations are permitted

after the completion of the 75th over, or after 5.20 pm

PLEASE review Rule 16 and be prepared to discuss it with your partner AND to answer any questions from captains.

2. Rain is coming…and it may interrupt the beginning, middle and end of each day’s play.  Please read Rule 16.1- 16.4, pp 36-38 of the VSDCA Handbook.

Become familiar with the concept of Actual Batting Time.

Actual Batting Time is always a forward calculation based on time available, regardless of the overs already bowled.

When time is lost, the action we take varies, depending on the amount of time lost, and the progress of the match. Some common situations are;

(a) When more than 60 minutes is lost on Day 1, we commence at 12 noon on Day 2 and may continue through to 6.05 pm;

(b) If fewer than 60 minutes are lost and the first batting team’s innings has not been completed by dismissal, declaration or compulsory closure, we commence at 12 noon on Day 2 and may continue through to 6.05 pm. In this circumstance, the team is entitled to receive its full entitlement of overs or the lower number of overs commensurate with a maximum of 60 minutes of additional batting time on Day 2.

(c) When time is lost, re-calculate overs remaining using Actual Batting Time and the chart on page 42 of the VSDCA Handbook

(d) On Day 2, if each side has completed a first innings, and by agreement between the captains (Note: not an umpire’s decision), the game may then conclude.

These points are not the complete set of rules for lost time – please make yourself familiar with Rule 16  as mentioned above.

3. Congratulations Justin Toohey, who has been selected to represent the VSDCA in the Victorian Country Cricket League vs VSDCA match at the Junction Oval on 10th December. Mark that date, and let’s get some VSDCA umps down there to enjoy the cricket and support Justin.

4. From last week – what happened next?

(a) After two LBWs to complete the hat-trick, the umpire MIGHT have thought “phew! I’m glad that’s over, I can relax a bit now…” except that the next ball was…another LBW!

(b) With the ball in the fielder’s hand and the sixth ball bowled, the umpire might have thought the action was over…”I can relax now” Except that the ball was thrown to the striker’s end with that player still just out of his ground. He nonchalantly put his bat in the path of the incoming throw, and on appeal, was given out Obstructing the Field.

The message from these two actual incidents is that it’s never ok to drop off until the ball is dead.

Enjoy Round 6 – do your best, and have fun!
