FINALS!

4. Contingency

Congratulations to all umpires on appointment to VSDCA Finals. This is the weekend the players play for, and it’s the weekend we umpire for, too. You have earned your appointment, so have a great weekend.

1. Your Preparation

Just as players prepare for Finals, so must we.  To assist you with your preparation, please review this document, which was provided by Umpires Coach Brian Benny Goodman  at the pre-finals dinner on March 5th.

In addition, please don’t forget

  •       Hydration – get it started today!

  •       Your partner – contact, say “Hi!” and agree on arrival time at the ground.

2. Preparation by/ Instructions to, clubs

Here is a document sent to clubs by VSDCA CEO Ken Hilton. It expresses clearly all that must be done for the weekend. Please note the highlighted areas with respect to handling of covers.

Umpires assume sole control of covers from 60 minutes prior to the scheduled match commencement, and remain in control after the completion of play on Day1, to ensure that covers are laid correctly and secured to the ground with pegs.

Note: this will necessitate the presence of one or both umpires on the ground after play ceases until the covers are in place and secured.

3. Forecast Weather Conditions – VSDCA Extreme Weather Policy

Yes, the vagaries of Melbourne’s weather have caught us – after a cool summer, we face the prospect of a very warm weekend – in March!  Umpires should read and understand their roles in implementing the VSDCA’s Extreme Weather Policy

Extreme Temperature Guidelines (trigger temperatures) are relevant where temperatures exceed

40C for 1st and 2nd XIs; and

38C for 3rd and 4th XIs

The VSDCA Board reserves the right to consider a full or partial cancellation of play where extreme temperatures are forecast. Any cancellation of play across the competition will be advised to clubs and umpires prior to 10.00 am on match day. Our reference point as an umpiring community will be the VSDCUA TeamApp and the VSDCUA website.

During the match, clubs will monitor current temperatures on a half-hourly basis, using the BOM website and mobile App.

Should the trigger temperature be exceeded, play will be suspended immediately at that club’s home ground. Clubs will continue to monitor temperatures, and play will not re-commence until the temperature falls below the respective triggers.

Umpires are charged with the responsibility to manage conditions, and as such, are the final arbiters of the fitness of conditions to allow play to continue.

4. Contingency

All of the preparations and precautions relating to extreme weather should be reviewed with captains before the toss.

In addition, please ensure that clubs understand that in the event play is cancelled/ abandoned and a one-day match played on Day 2, it will be a white clothes/red ball day.

Once again, congratulations on your appointment – go out there, do your best, and have fun!
