  1. Return to red ball cricket and Two-Day VSDCA Rules

Round 14 is our final two-day match before Finals. Please review VSDCA Rule 16 and be prepared to discuss it with your partner in your pre-match pow-wow tomorrow.

Remember to encourage teams to be on time by providing feedback on their progress against ‘standard time’ at least every hour. The easiest way to achieve this is to remember that it’s 17 overs per hour, or 3 ½ minutes per over.

As umpires we cannot control the pace of play, but it is our responsibility to make players aware of their progress so that the daily quota is bowled within the stated playing times and we finish on time, (which for tomorrow will leave just enough time to slip on our Tay Tay outfits and get to the concert!)

Available batting time: in two-day matches it is not uncommon for a batting team to have its innings closed within stated playing times, either by declaration or by being dismissed.

In this situation, umpires must advise captains and scorers of the overs remaining in the day’s play. We do this by calculating Available Batting Time (time remaining minus known intervals – tea, for example) and referring the Table in Rule 16 of the VSDCA Handbook.

The number of overs bowled prior to the end of the completed innings is not relevant to the calculation – it is always a calculation of Available Batting Time and commensurate overs.

2. Team Work Between Umpires

For those umpires fortunate enough to stand with a partner, the value of good teamwork cannot be over-stated. Not only does it make us feel more secure, it is a great confidence booster for players, who quickly pick up the good teamwork vibe.

Makes for a great afternoon.

Some simple ways we can work on teamwork are

  •       Pre-match discussion – Rules and likely match conditions

  •  Staying in touch throughout the afternoon, signalling two to go and confirming balls to go after each “bowl again” extra

  •       Assisting with above the waist and above the shoulder deliveries.

PLEASE NOTE: Umpires Coach Brian Benny Goodman has advised that EITHER umpire may call these deliveries. It will always be the responsibility of the umpire at the non-striker’s end to communicate with scorers, but this does not mean that the striker’s end umpire is off duty. Where such deliveries are observed they must be called in the first instance by EITHER umpire.

3. Appointment Changes

Several late changes to umpire availability have necessitated a series of changes to appointments. Please review your appointment and speak with your partner before travelling to the ground. Doesn’t need to be a long-winded conversation, a brief “Hello see you tomorrow at (time)” will suffice.
