Round 13 will see Peter Frencham chalk up his 400th game in Subbies, which is a great achievement, for a great bloke.
Peter started his involvement with cricket in 1960 at the age of 12, playing on a Saturday for the Fitzroy Colts, in what was then the District Cricket 5th XI competition. On a Sunday Peter’s older brother would occasionally take him along for a game in a hotel competition, playing for the Aberdeen Hotel.
On turning 18 Peter managed to get a couple of games for the Fitzroy 2nd’s. After 6 years at Fitzroy, he moved on to the Prahran & Southern Districts for 8 years playing for Michelin Tyres. Next stop was playing for Jacana in the North West Competition for a couple of years, then on to the Essendon Broadmeadows Churches competition, playing for St John’s up until 1990.
In 1991 Pete crossed over to the umpiring ranks at the Essendon Broadmeadows Churches competition until 1995, then had a year with the Metropolitan Cricket League. In 1997 the MCL merged with Subbies and Peter moved across with Don Nichols, Noki Tryphonos, Colin Newport, Alby Padley, Norm Hadlow and Alan Hives.
Pete rates Subbies as the best competition he has been involved with and he has a lot of great memories from his 26 seasons. Best memory is doing the Caulfield v Malvern semi final in the 1st’s with Paul Edwards.
He has umpired a total of 34 finals games, which includes 2 x 2nd XI, 1 x 3rd XI and 4 x 4th XI grand finals. Another highlight was the 2018 Craig Grand Final, which was the biggest crowd Peter has umpired in front of.
Another memory was a T20 twilight game in which Elysee Perry (Australian player) who was a guest player for Brunswick in a game against Williamstown. Elysse was still a teenager at this time, but made the top score which helped Brunswick to win the game.
Peter has been a loyal and reliable member of our panel and he is always a pleasure to umpire with, and we look forward to Pete carrying on the fine work and reaching the 500 game milestone.
PS: Pete is down to umpire his 400th with Gary White, who umpired his first game back in 1997 with Pete.
Go well Pete!!!!!
